5. We’d like to hear an example of a “Human Investment” in your life. Have you provided support to someone or invested in a person? Was there a time when someone invested in or supported you! Tell us about a relationship that has paid big dividends.  My first boss has been a Mentor to me throughout my career even after he retired.  He believed in me from an early age, and continued to put me in challenging situations to see me grow and succeed.  I still go to him today with questions and thoughts that I have.

6. What is one key lesson you have learned in your career that you would share with a young man or woman?  Learn as much as you can from everyone.  Everyone has different backgrounds and differences that vary from your own.  Everyone’s role is vital for the organization to succeed.

Meet Our Honoree: Dow Famulak

Dow Famulak hiresK.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers, marking its 30th anniversary of receiving new product donations from the fashion, home and children’s industries, will honor two industry leaders and a charitable foundation at its annual gala fundraiser Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers is the charity of choice for new product donations made by hundreds of companies in the fashion, home and children’s industries. Donating new merchandise provides these companies with a simple and effective way to help people in need.

This year the charity’s annual gala recognizes the support of Dow Famulak of Global Brands Group. Dow Famulak has been president and an executive director of the Global Brands Group since the company was originally listed in July 2014, taking on the role of Chief Operating Officer in July 2015 in addition to his current responsibilities for managing the Group’s business operations globally. In 2000, he joined Li & Fung Group and assumed various senior management roles at the operating groups of Li & Fung Limited until April 2014. Dow previously served as the  chief operating officer of Colby International Limited. Prior to his appointment at Colby, Dow was a partner in the law firm of Baker & McKenzie, Hong Kong. Dow and his wife, Angelique, feels strongly about helping children and causes that focus on family, health or education. They are long term supporters of Room To Read in Asia where they have worked to help boost literacy and gender equality in access to education. They have helped build libraries and funded scholarships for girls in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.  Since moving to New York, they have become very involved with the Komansky Center for Children’s Health at NY Presbyterian Weill Cornell Hospital as well as with Baby Buggy. Given his  involvement in the community and philanthropic  initiatives, Famulak is the perfect candidate to be honored at this year’s Annual  Gala.

  1. What is your job title and office location? President & COO, Global Brands Group (GBG), Empire State Building, 350 Fifth Avenue, New York NY
  1. What is your hometown?  Melville, Saskatchewan, Canada
  1. What is your Alma mater? The University of British Columbia, B.A. (Honors) and The University of Saskatchewan, L.L.B.
  1. What is the thing you love most about your job? People. I get to work every day with incredibly talented people. This honor I’ll be getting on November 4th is really all about, and should be given to, all of the people working at Global Brands Group.
  1. We’d like to hear an example of a “Human Investment” in your life. Have you provided support to someone or invested in a person? Was there a time when someone invested in or supported you! Tell us about a relationship that has paid big dividends. I have been fortunate to work with a lot of people, but the person who has invested in me and continues to do so is our CEO, Bruce Rockowitz. Without Bruce, I would still likely be a lawyer in a big law firm. With his support, I am the President and COO of an amazing company in the fashion business. I couldn’t be happier or more grateful. I invest in people in our business every day. They are our most important and only real assets.
  1. What is one key lesson you have learned in your career that you would share with a young man or woman? The one lesson I really learned early on from a former boss, Allan Zeman, was, “Make a decision. If it’s not right, we can fix it, but if you don’t make a decision, the decision makes you.”
  1. In your opinion, what is the most important thing about the work that K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers does?  As a parent, the thing that is most important to me is that I look after my kids and provide as much as I can for them. I am fortunate enough to be in a position where I can provide and create a solid foundation for my  children. However, there are millions of parents who through misfortune are not as lucky and may struggle to provide for their children. The work that K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers does to assist those parents is critical in  today’s world. No parent wants to feel they cannot support or provide necessities for their children.
  1. What is your favorite cause and why? I really don’t have one favorite cause, but all of the causes I do support focuson children. The three that really come to mind are Room to Read, Ronald McDonald House, and the pediatric hospital at New York-Presbyterian. Room to Read’s founder John Wood is an inspiration and does an amazing job building schools and educating kids in Third World countries. The “home away from home” and overall support that Ronald McDonald House provides for families affected by pediatric cancer is wonderful and gives them a sense of hope as they fight together. My wife, Angelique, sits on the committee at NY-Presbyterian and the work the hospital does for the children and their families is inspiring.
  1. What has been your most memorable experience related to charity?  My daughter’s eight-year-old friend has cancer that thankfully she is beating. My wife and I participated in a charity spin day to raise money for pediatric cancer research. The parents and families at that event who had children fighting cancer or who had lost their battle became heroes to us. I walked away that day very humbled and more determined than ever to do whatever I could to make kids smile in the face of very difficult situations.
  1. Why do you think it is important for brands or individuals to give back to society? All of us are one accident or one diagnosis away from being in a very bad situation. My family and I are so grateful for what we have and feel we should do what we can to help those who in need. A society that supports less fortunate people is one I want to live in.
