Responding to the Massive Residential Fire in Edgewater, New Jersey

About K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers, Disaster Relief Comments Off on Responding to the Massive Residential Fire in Edgewater, New Jersey

On Wednesday, January 21st, a massive fire in Edgewater, New Jersey destroyed half of the apartments in a 408-unit complex, permanently displacing about 500 people who lived there, and temporarily forcing the evacuation of another 500 people who lived nearby.  Thankfully, there were no casualties; sadly, there are now many families who are stranded with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers immediately responded to this disaster, getting in touch with the Town of Secaucus Municipal Government Center, a network community partner on the ground who provided us with a list of types of items that were most requested.  As you can imagine, warm coats and other cold-weather apparel was at the top of the list.   Blankets, pillows, undergarments, footwear, baby product were also needed badly.

We turned to our very generous retail donor partners, and were able to quickly procure and provide these families with these much-needed items.  Overjoyed to be alive, daunted by what lies ahead, especially for those who lost everything that they had to leave behind, these families will face many challenges in the new year.

Since 1985, K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers’ mission has been to provide hope to children, families and individuals facing daily challenges and recovering from disasters.

We would like to thank the companies listed below for helping us help them so quickly.

Reflecting on Dr. King’s Legacy

About K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers, Advocacy Comments Off on Reflecting on Dr. King’s Legacy

On Martin Luther King Day, we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, the needs he identified, and the goals that have not yet been achieved. On a rainy, cold day at the Bayard Street Presbyterian Church last week, as I worked alongside church members, firefighters and other local community representatives, helping Chantal, Linda and others select a warm coat, I felt that we had already begun our commemoration.

At K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers, we work every day with community nonprofits that are serving those in need.  In several of his speeches, including his renowned “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” address in Memphis on April 3, 1968, Dr. King reminded his audience that the basic necessities of the underprivileged were among his concerns:

“It’s all right to talk about “long white robes over yonder,” in all of its symbolism. But ultimately people want some suits and dresses and shoes to wear down here!”

Today, the country also honors Dr. King’s dream by focusing on January 19 as a national day for volunteer service. It is in the efforts of volunteers and others working to make our society a better place that bring the K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers mission to life. Last year we received over $155 million of donated merchandise from 382 companies to help 825 local partner organizations improve the daily lives of people in need. The donations we distribute – proper work attire, clothes for school, shoes, toys, books or something special to make a house a home –help with daily life “down here.”

As you think about Dr. King’s legacy, among all the great milestones of his achievement were also many small ones that gave people comfort along the way. Please think about what you can do to help improve the lives of people in need.  At K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers, we do that every day.
