On Wednesday, January 21st, a massive fire in Edgewater, New Jersey destroyed half of the apartments in a 408-unit complex, permanently displacing about 500 people who lived there, and temporarily forcing the evacuation of another 500 people who lived nearby. Thankfully, there were no casualties; sadly, there are now many families who are stranded with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers immediately responded to this disaster, getting in touch with the Town of Secaucus Municipal Government Center, a network community partner on the ground who provided us with a list of types of items that were most requested. As you can imagine, warm coats and other cold-weather apparel was at the top of the list. Blankets, pillows, undergarments, footwear, baby product were also needed badly.
We turned to our very generous retail donor partners, and were able to quickly procure and provide these families with these much-needed items. Overjoyed to be alive, daunted by what lies ahead, especially for those who lost everything that they had to leave behind, these families will face many challenges in the new year.
Since 1985, K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers’ mission has been to provide hope to children, families and individuals facing daily challenges and recovering from disasters.
